Across those eight episodes<\/strong>, the show follows Bass Reeves from enslavement to life as a formidable lawman. It presents him as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi and credits him with more than 3,000 arrests. There\u2019s plenty of big frontier action, but the series also stays focused on character, and it holds up on its own instead of leaning too heavily on those early 1883<\/em> spinoff roots.<\/p>\n\n

David Oyelowo stars and executive produces after spending nearly a decade helping get the project made. Chad Feehan created the series. Taylor Sheridan also serves as an executive producer, while Dennis Quaid, Lauren E. Banks, and Donald Sutherland round out the cast. And if you\u2019ve seen Hayley Atwell mentioned anywhere, she isn\u2019t part of the main cast<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The show draws from the first two books<\/strong> in Sidney Thompson\u2019s Bass Reeves Trilogy<\/em>. It does take some creative liberties, though critics were largely positive about Oyelowo\u2019s performance, the ensemble, and the way the series handles race, justice, faith, violence, family duty, and American Indian representation.<\/p>\n\n

If you\u2019re in the mood for a character-rich western that sits outside the usual Yellowstone<\/em> orbit, Lawmen: Bass Reeves<\/em> is well worth picking up<\/strong>, even if no follow-up Lawmen<\/em> chapter has been officially announced.<\/p>\n\n
