At Disney\u2019s D23 event, Simpsons creator Matt Groening said that \u201cthe original game is coming back in some form<\/a>,\u201d referring to The Simpsons: Hit & Run<\/a><\/strong>. That was enough to throw the game back into the spotlight, even though there\u2019s still been no official announcement.<\/p>\n

Then Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman tossed in an \u201cor not,\u201d which is a pretty clear sign not to get too carried away<\/strong>. Nothing has been confirmed. Even so, that little exchange was enough to set off a fresh round of talk about a remaster, a remake, a port, or some other kind of comeback.<\/p>\n\n

Anyone who played The Simpsons: Hit & Run in 2003 probably gets why people still care. The PS2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC<\/strong> release took a GTA-style open world, dropped it into Springfield, let you switch between characters, and packed in humor that actually felt like the show.<\/p>\n\n

So if you\u2019ve been waiting for a proper modern version of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, this is something to watch. The game still hasn\u2019t shown up<\/strong> on current platforms, and fans have kept it alive with PC mods, online multiplayer, total conversions, connected maps, and even a fan remake in Unreal Engine 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The biggest problem still looks like the corporate side<\/strong>. Disney is part of it. Activision is too, along with Vivendi\u2019s Microsoft ties, and Electronic Arts also complicates things because of its past Simpsons licensing. Selman has called it a \u201ccomplicated corporate octopus,\u201d though he also said \u201cnever say never,\u201d and former Radical Entertainment developers have said they\u2019d be happy to see it come back.<\/p>\n\n

For now, the original The Simpsons: Hit & Run is still only playable on its older platforms, because there\u2019s no new version<\/strong> to download yet.<\/p>\n
