Reports that surfaced in August 2026 say Netflix has scrapped its planned U.S. follow-up to Squid Game. That changes the way Cate Blanchett’s finale cameo lands.

Her Los Angeles recruiter scene looked, at first, like a tidy handoff to an American continuation, especially after 2024 reports that David Fincher was developing an English-language project called Heckler. Now it reads less like franchise setup and more like a warning: the system outlives Korea. Those August 2026 reports said the project was dropped because of Fincher’s schedule and because Netflix had shifted toward several international spinoffs instead.

That lines up with what Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said. Cate Blanchett’s scene wasn’t meant as shared-universe launch bait. It was there to show that exploitative systems keep reproducing themselves, even after one piece of them gets dragged into the light.

Season 2 was already nudging the story that way when it premiered on December 26, 2024. It recast Seong Gi-hun’s airport decision as the start of a mission to destroy the games, and it pushed harder on social division too. Reviews were mixed. Even so, Netflix says it still reached No. 1 in 93 countries.

So if you read the finale as the start of a broader franchise, this update shifts that reading pretty sharply.

You can stream Squid Game Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix now. Netflix has also confirmed Season 3, and Squid Game: The Challenge has been renewed for a second season.
