The argument over whether AI systems could be sentient has moved to the center of public debate. You can see it in Pope Leo XIV\u2019s rejection of machine consciousness in the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas<\/em>, and in Anthropic\u2019s work on model welfare. In Magnifica Humanitas<\/em>, the Vatican doesn\u2019t leave much room for ambiguity: chatbots don\u2019t have bodies, experiences, joy, pain<\/strong>, or conscience, even as millions of people use them for workplace conflicts, caregiving, personal decisions, and services such as healthcare, hiring, and transport.<\/p>\n\n

Philosophers, including Georgia Tech\u2019s Rionna Sparrow, draw an important distinction here. A system can sound moral and give ethical advice without feeling harm, carrying responsibility, or facing consequences. On that view, sentience, not intelligence<\/strong> by itself, remains central to moral status. You can see the same distinction inside AI labs. After The New York Times<\/em> reported that Anthropic cofounder Chris Olah considered skipping a Vatican event, the company was also consulting scholars, studying morally relevant experiences, and banning sustained cruel behavior toward its models.<\/p>\n

Margaret Landi and Lida Anestidou still treat sentience, cognition, and self-awareness<\/strong> as a cluster, while false police tips, hacking attempts, the EU AI Act, and US fights over accountability show that trust and regulation<\/a> are still catching up.
