Here, Peter is defined by a warning from Richard Parker: “Power makes monsters, every time.” That lesson comes out of a traumatic childhood memory, after Peter’s pet cat dies. So the book isn’t really asking how he’ll use power. It’s asking whether he can hold on to his humanity at all. Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson strips away Peter’s usual wisecracks, and artist ScieTronc leans hard into the horror with art shaped by manga and Japanese horror.

In Midnight Spider-Man, Peter takes a job at Oscorp hoping to change the company from the inside, all while he and Uncle Ben are getting squeezed by money problems. Then Oscorp’s illegal experiments in eternal life put him in the path of a genetically altered, gamma-irradiated spider pumped full of mutant growth hormone. The bite sets off a grotesque transformation, one tied directly to Uncle Ben’s death. If you’re after a darker Spider-Man story that flips Marvel’s classic power-and-responsibility idea on its head, this one’s worth picking up.
