Square Enix spent 2024, and now 2025, pushing remakes hard. That has pulled a lot of the publisher’s older RPG catalog back into view, with Parasite Eve, the 1998 Aya Brea horror-RPG, looking more and more like an obvious pick for a revival.

Square Enix still leans most heavily on Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts, but the remake schedule has filled out fast: November 14, 2024 Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake launched on November 14, 2024, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven arrived on October 24, 2024, and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is set for 2025, Final Fantasy Resonance follows on October 22, 2026, and Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United lands on February 16, 2027. Against that backdrop, Parasite Eve keeps standing out. The 1998 Aya Brea horror-RPG, built around Eve awakening mitochondria in Manhattan, mixed Final Fantasy VII tech with Resident Evil-style tension, cinematic storytelling, and recognizable locations, from the Natural History Museum to the Chrysler Building. Then there are the 1999 and 2010 sequels, and the fact that survival horror is having another big moment. It’s easy to picture the series getting the Final Fantasy VII Remake treatment.

Bloodmasque, a stylish 2013 vampire RPG set in an alternate 19th-century Paris, also feels due for a return, especially since it was limited to iPhone and iPad; writer Kazutoyo Maehiro has said he wrote roughly 3,000 years of lore.

If you want the deeper cuts, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is worth picking up, and you can play Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake right now while Parasite Eve, Bloodmasque, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Vagrant Story are still absent from modern platforms.
