Bloomberg has published an article on how Grand Theft Auto 6 was made in which they revealed some new details about the most anticipated video game of the year. In this article journalist Jason Schreier visited the company’s offices and spoke with some of the project leads about the eight years of development<\/strong>, the layoffs of workers, the crunch, and the changes that have taken place during this time and in relation to the studio’s previous game<\/a>, Red Dead Redemption 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

A very ambitious game<\/h2>\n\n

The most interesting thing it revealed is that GTA6 was supposed to have been developed in parallel with Red Dead Redemption 2, but they couldn’t do it because the studio considered that they would need everyone involved in each of the projects. That’s why they focused all their efforts on one game at a time, not beginning development on GTA6 until they had finished Red Dead Redemption 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

GTA6 has been a project led by three directors instead of just one (Rob Nelson, Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut), in part because one of Rockstar’s co-founders, Dan Houser, left the studio. By 2019 they had already locked down the core of the story, by 2022 they already had built many of the gameplay systems, and the video leak from late 2022 led them to curtail many workers’ rights<\/strong>. Meanwhile, they have neither confirmed nor denied that Rockstar no longer does crunch, although they claim that \u201cit hasn’t been as bad\u201d as with Red Dead Redemption 2. A game with a crunch period so brutal that it caused a schism in the industry, turning it into an issue discussed publicly for the first time in the history of the medium.<\/p>\n\n

After two delays, one of them because they hadn’t populated an entire area of the game with NPCs and which led them to build an entire studio in Los Angeles to populate it, and layoffs of workers for unionizing, the game has been through a lot. But Rockstar insists that their next game won’t take eight years to make because the next game will be like the jump from GTA III<\/a> to Vice City<\/a> back in the day<\/strong>. With GTA6 coming out on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, all that’s left is to see whether all these sacrifices have, at least, resulted in a good game.
