US cybersecurity hiring fell to its lowest level in four years<\/strong> in 2026. Through September, employers posted 235,786 jobs, down 26.4% from 320,210 over the same period a year earlier, after the hiring spike in 2025.<\/p>\n\n

The month-by-month numbers make this look more like a correction than a collapse. Postings are only about 4% below 2024<\/strong> levels, and September was the only month that topped 2025, by fewer than 400 roles.<\/p>\n

Traditional defensive roles still account for the biggest share. But governance, risk, and compliance kept gaining ground, rising from 9.4% of postings in 2023 to 14.8% in 2026 as rules like NIS2 and DORA drove hiring around audits, risk management, and compliance. SANS says 95% of organizations<\/strong> felt regulation affecting hiring in 2026, up from 40% the year before.<\/p>\n\n

CISO hiring hasn’t disappeared; it’s been uneven. Postings fell 38.9%<\/strong> from the 2025 peak, then bounced back 19.5% between Q2 and Q3 2026. CyberSN CEO Deidre Diamond says executive turnover can slow budgets, approvals, and decisions around how the role gets defined.<\/p>\n\n

If you work in cybersecurity, this is the part to watch: analysts still put the global workforce gap at 4.8 million<\/strong> and count more than 500,000 open US roles, but employers are moving away from generalists and toward specialties such as cloud security architecture and identity.<\/p>\n\n
