HBO has officially unveiled True Detective Season 5. Nicolas Cage is set to play Detective Henry Logan, with Antonio Banderas as Rai García, and the series is leaving the Alaska backdrop of True Detective: Night Country for Jamaica Bay in New York. Issa López is coming back as showrunner after Night Country became, in HBO’s telling, the most-watched season the series has had. HBO also says this new chapter takes place in the same universe, which probably means some of the magical realism that shaped Season 4 will carry over.

That casting locks in the rumors that started back in August 2025 and were basically confirmed when Nicolas Cage spoke at New York Comic Con in October 2026.

The real draw here is the pairing. Prestige TV doesn’t often land two stars like this for the same season, and it’s the first time Cage and Banderas have appeared on screen together.

Cage has spent the last several years moving between cult genre projects and widely praised dramatic roles. Banderas, meanwhile, is still one of the biggest names in international film. In a franchise that usually runs on tense, combustible partnerships, people are going to be talking about their chemistry right away.

Even if you weren’t sold on True Detective: Night Country, this season still looks like one to keep an eye on. Night Country picked up momentum as it went, split both viewers and critics, and even drew public criticism from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Still, HBO is plainly backing Issa López and its new leads.
