Google has changed Search again, this time giving publisher links more visibility inside AI-generated answers in AI Overviews<\/a> and AI Mode.<\/p>\n

Links now show up inline, higher on the page<\/strong> and more often. Google is also testing a box above some answers that surfaces one or two official or task-focused pages, along with a short note on why those links might help.<\/p>\n\n

The company is also expanding news carousels for fast-moving topics to more countries and languages. It’s adding thumbnail-based Dive Deeper<\/a><\/strong> links too, and making publisher and creator names clickable in video results. If you use Google Search<\/a> to get back to the original source, this update deserves a close look.<\/p>\n\n

The move comes after publishers complained that AI summaries are cutting into their traffic. Studies cited in that argument say top-ranking pages can lose 30% to 79%<\/strong> of clicks when an Overview appears, one field experiment found outbound organic clicks dropped by nearly 40%, and zero-click searches climbed 34.5%. Smaller sites appear to be getting hit harder than anyone, especially those built around how-to and explainer content.<\/p>\n\n

Google says use of Preferred Sources has grown more than sevenfold<\/strong> since early 2026, and those picks will now be highlighted in news carousels. Search Console, though, still doesn’t offer much detailed reporting on Overview clicks. The update is rolling out across Google Search, alongside a News pilot licensing program that Google says now includes more than 400 publications.<\/p>\n
