By October 2026, the Call of Duty game behind those Steam-hit headlines is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Activision still hasn’t officially released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

Those stories are most likely referring to 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. When campaign early access opened on a Friday for people who’d digitally pre-ordered the game, it briefly climbed to a Very Positive 92% across more than 3,100 Steam reviews. That put it ahead of the Steam figures being quoted for Black Ops 7 at 37%, 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at 79%, 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II at 45%, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at 79%. There was a catch, though: at that stage, only the most committed pre-order players could get in, and a group like that can skew Steam sentiment pretty easily.

If you’re trying to decide whether Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is worth picking up based on those early numbers, the longer-term picture looks much worse. The game later slid into mostly negative territory, and by October 2026 it was sitting at a Mixed rating on Steam with roughly 33% positive reviews. Players criticized the short campaign, the recycled Warzone-like spaces, and the weak story, while IGN said it was possibly the worst Call of Duty single-player campaign it had played. Steam concurrent-player peaks dropped too, falling from more than 160,000 in April 2024 to about 7,000 by October 2026, although Activision said early cross-platform engagement beat its predecessor. You can get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III on Steam and other platforms. A real Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is still only rumored for October 2026.
