Analyst David Linthicum frames the billion-deaths scenario in much harsher, more practical terms. For that to happen, someone would need access to infrastructure<\/strong>, weapons, supply chains, or biological systems, on top of weak governance, poor security, reckless deployment, and deliberate misuse.<\/p>\n\n

For most people right now, the bigger risk is simpler: \u201cthe technology in the hands of the incompetent.\u201d Think fraud, deepfakes, data leakage, biased decisions, broken automation, and cyber abuse.<\/p>\n\n

Public reports and forecasts show how fast that risk is growing. In 2026, 1 in 4<\/strong>, malicious breaches involved advanced digital tools, up 56% from the year before, with losses nearing $6 million. Cybercrime is projected to top $12.5 trillion, and 62% of attacks hit energy, manufacturing, and government.<\/p>\n\n

If you run business or public systems, Gates’s warning isn’t abstract. Public reports say 29% of vulnerabilities<\/strong> were exploited within 24 hours, while patching took 55 days. Another 84% of ransomware attacks relied on those vulnerabilities, and deepfakes accounted for 6.5% of fraud attempts.<\/p>\n\n
