Since July<\/strong>, DeepSeek<\/a>, a Chinese AI company, has been barred from U.S. federal civilian agency systems. The Department of Homeland Security has ordered agencies to remove DeepSeek products and stop making new purchases.<\/p>\n

That DHS directive also extends to third-party software<\/strong> that uses DeepSeek models. The department warned about several threat paths, including sensitive data reaching China, exposure to malware, and other cybersecurity risks tied to Chinese infrastructure and national security laws.<\/p>\n\n

If you follow federal AI use, this is one to watch. DeepSeek’s open-source models are built into a lot of vendor and contractor tools<\/strong>, so agencies may be facing long audits and, in some cases, may not even know which products include DeepSeek.<\/p>\n\n

Reports say the order has been in effect since July<\/strong> at the Treasury, State, and Justice departments. It applies to civilian agencies, not the Department of Defense in quite the same way, but the Commerce Department, the U.S. Navy, and states including New York, Tennessee, and Virginia had already blocked DeepSeek.<\/p>\n\n

The DHS notice also sits inside the larger U.S.-China tech fight<\/a>. Beijing has criticized the restrictions, Australia has limited DeepSeek on government systems, the U.K.<\/strong> has warned about data risks, and more moves may follow as officials work out where the technology is embedded.<\/p>\n
