Star Trek: Outposts Unknown, a Strange New Worlds-era strategy game from Magic Fuel Games and Playstack, came out on October 20 and helps start Paramount’s broader run-up to Star Trek’s 60th anniversary in 2026, with plans stretching across TV, games, books, collectibles, and crossover projects.

In Outposts Unknown, you’re building Starfleet outposts, managing crews, and heading off to explore new worlds. Early Steam user reviews are mixed, though the sample is still small. Some players say it’s too straightforward, only lightly connected to Star Trek, and not polished or deep enough. Others are into the more approachable style and have even compared it favorably to Surviving Mars.

That split says something bigger, too. The reaction to Star Trek: Outposts Unknown lines up pretty closely with the larger argument around modern Star Trek, and you can see the same pattern in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. That season got plenty of praise for its episodic storytelling, the chemistry of the cast, and the production values. It also caught criticism for leaning on familiar tropes and steering clear of bigger swings, even while the franchise keeps expanding, with an estimated $2.6 billion in streaming subscriber revenue, Starfleet Academy already in production, and a new film still being developed.

So if you’re after an accessible Star Trek strategy game, Star Trek: Outposts Unknown might be worth picking up. Just go in knowing fans are split on it.
