The Department of Homeland Security has told agencies to remove DeepSeek products<\/a><\/strong>, stop purchasing them, and block third-party software built on DeepSeek’s open-source models. Washington’s case is straightforward: DeepSeek’s servers sit in China, Chinese law can force companies to cooperate with the state, and American developers have also accused Chinese firms, DeepSeek included, of distilling top U.S. models.<\/p>\n\n

If you track AI policy, this fight matters. Beijing is calling for fair treatment<\/strong> for DeepSeek overseas while people in China still can’t officially use OpenAI’s ChatGPT<\/a>, Anthropic’s Claude<\/a>, or Google’s Gemini. China’s own generative AI market has been shaped by approval requirements, content controls, and political alignment rules under the country’s 2023 AI regulations.<\/p>\n\n

China’s foreign and commerce ministries say the U.S. is stretching the idea of national security and singling out Chinese companies unfairly. Analysts see something else in the response too: backing a homegrown player<\/strong>, strengthening Beijing’s argument that Washington is trying to box China in, and creating political cover if retaliation comes next.<\/p>\n\n

You can see the larger U.S.-China tech struggle all over this, from chips and software to cloud services and next-generation computing. At the same time, reports say both governments<\/strong> are still keeping safety and governance channels open in case advanced AI systems cause incidents. DeepSeek is still available inside China. It just won’t be running on U.S. civilian federal networks under the DHS order.<\/p>\n
