When Stephen King published Carrie in 1974, he probably didn’t dream, not even in his wildest dreams, that more than 50 years later we’d still be not only talking about it, but greenlighting fresh new versions. It’s the case with Amazon Prime Video‘s new series, which, besides retelling the story in the present day,, has also been greenlit for a second season. What they’re going to do with it is, I’m afraid, totally made up.

My Carrie was stolen from me

It’s true that Mike Flanagan has made enough changes to the story (some of them groundbreaking) for it to seem totally new and it ends on a more or less open ending, but I don’t know if that’s enough to justify another batch of episodes that rides roughshod over the book. Flanagan has King’s blessing to do whatever he wants with his work, but even so it certainly seems out of place.

“For 50 years, audiences have grown up with and been drawn to the story of Carrie White. From the beginning we imagined a story that would go beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and his support in exploring what comes next”, Flanagan has said. Whether it’ll be a success or a colossal flop remains to be seen.

At least there’s the consolation that King one hundred percent supports whatever they’re going to do: “I can’t wait for audiences to see what’s coming for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s going to be thrilling“. It’s worth remembering that Carrie already had a sequel, Carrie 2: The Rage, but, for whatever reason, those of us who’ve seen it don’t talk about it without being tortured first.
