In 2015, Robert Eggers released The Witch, a horror film set in 1630s New England. It was Anya Taylor-Joy’s breakout role, before Split, The Queen’s Gambit, The Menu, and Furiosa turned her into a star.

The Witch centers on a Puritan family coming apart after their infant son vanishes. Crops fail. Food runs short. Fear and paranoia settle over the house. Thomasin, the oldest daughter and the one watching the baby when he disappears, becomes the obvious target: her mother’s suspicion hardens, her younger siblings spin tales of witchcraft, and her father’s authority starts to give way under the strain. The movie doesn’t hand you the usual final girl who survives the evil and puts everything back in place. It drives Thomasin somewhere darker, stranger, and oddly freeing. Taylor-Joy plays her with fear, restraint, and a quiet streak of defiance, and that balance makes Thomasin feel painfully human even as her own home turns into a kind of cage.

The Witch mattered for reasons that go past Taylor-Joy’s career, too. It helped cement A24’s standing in horror. It gave people their first real look at Eggers’ exacting style. It also fed the folk-horror wave that ran through the 2010s. And then there’s Black Phillip, along with the film’s oppressive sound design, its use of natural light, and all that 17th-century detail, which is exactly what some viewers love and exactly what others still find slow or archaic.

If you’re after one of the bleakest horror movies of the last decade, The Witch is an easy pick. You can stream it where it’s available, but that changes by region and by date, so check your local listings first.
