Reports have started to fill in Microsoft’s next Xbox hardware plans, with a first-party handheld now pegged for late 2027 and a premium Project Helix console reportedly set for late 2028.

Those same reports place Project Helix somewhere around $1,200 to $1,800 without a subsidy, which makes it pretty easy to see why the portable is starting to feel like the bigger launch.

A lot of that comes down to software. Lower cost and more flexible play help, sure, but the handheld’s real edge may be that, unlike the Windows-based ASUS ROG Xbox Ally devices, the rumored Microsoft portable is expected, according to those reports, to run on a tighter Xbox layer.

And that’s a big deal when the complaints about Windows gaming handhelds already sound familiar: messy, laggy, finicky. A cleaner Xbox stack could make the whole thing easier to use, trim overhead, and leave more power available for the games themselves.

If what you want is a more mainstream Xbox device, this rumored Microsoft handheld looks like one to keep an eye on.

Microsoft still hasn’t locked in any public details on the processor, memory, price, battery, native play versus cloud or hybrid support, or how much tech it might share with Project Helix. Even so, the opening in the market is easy to spot, with forecasts climbing from about $12.9 billion to $17.49 billion in 2025 and then toward $39.25 billion by 2034, along with ASUS Ally revenue, Nintendo Switch 2 sales, Steam Deck momentum, and the hard expansion limits in Japan, South Korea, and China.
