Google Flights has refreshed its 2026 holiday booking advice, and the updated Thanksgiving and Christmas windows matter if you still haven’t bought your tickets.

For Thanksgiving, Google Flights says fares are usually lowest 21 to 57 days before departure. The bottom of that range tends to hit about 34 days out, around October 23, so the absolute lowest fare may already be behind you. Christmas looks a little different. Google says fares are usually lowest 33 to 67 days before departure, with the best prices showing up about 56 days out, around October 30, which puts travelers right in the sweet spot now. Hold off too long and it gets more expensive fast: Google Flights warns that prices often jump in the final 21 to 30 days before a trip, especially when your holiday dates are locked in.

If you still need to book holiday travel, this update is worth a look. Analysts expect the most expensive holiday season in a decade, with average domestic round-trip fares at about $402 for Thanksgiving and $452 for Christmas. That’s up 31% and 23% year over year. They’re tying the increase to strong demand, high jet fuel costs, and fewer bargain options after Spirit Airlines shut down.

You can check the guidance on Google Flights on the web or in the Google Flights app. And there may still be ways to save: fly on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, choose midweek departures and returns, or take a connecting flight. Google Flights says those are about 20% cheaper than nonstop.
