SEGA says Sonic X Shadow Generations has now passed 3 million copies sold worldwide. That’s another big sales hit for the publisher.

The result isn’t hard to explain. Sonic X Shadow Generations bundles a remaster of 2011’s Sonic Generations with the new Shadow Generations campaign, and that combination of nostalgia, new material, and the whole Fearless: Year of Shadow campaign has kept Sonic in front of people across both games and film. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gave it another bump, too.

SEGA’s numbers tell the story pretty clearly: more than 1 million copies sold on day one, 1.5 million by November 2024, 2 million in January 2025, and 2.3 million in June 2025 before landing at this latest milestone. The company still hasn’t shared a platform-by-platform or regional breakdown. Even so, Western markets still look like the main driver, Japan seems to be picking up, and the critical reception was solid overall, including an 80 on Metacritic and a Players’ Voice nomination at The Game Awards 2024.

If you’re after a modern Sonic release, this still looks like a good one to pick up. Sonic X Shadow Generations launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on October 25, 2024. Nintendo Switch 2 joined the list on June 5, 2025. That broad release helped keep the game in view.
