Prime Video‘s live-action God of War series appears to have made a major change in the middle of production. Dave Bautista has reportedly taken over the role of Kratos after Ryan Hurst reportedly tore his bicep during filming in June 2026. Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions are producing the series, which adapts PlayStation’s Norse-era God of War games and is set to stream on Prime Video.

Bautista feels like a strong choice for Kratos. The part needs size and physical presence, obviously, but that isn’t enough on its own. Kratos also has to carry vulnerability, controlled rage, grief, and that tight, fatherly restraint that defines so much of the newer games. The supporting cast reportedly includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Callum Vinson as Atreus, and Alastair Duncan returning as Mimir.

Ronald D. Moore is reportedly attached as showrunner, with Frederick E.O. Toye reportedly directing, which gives the project a team with real genre experience behind it. The bigger challenge is keeping hold of the games’ emotional center, especially the Kratos and Atreus father-son dynamic, while still delivering the weight and scale of the mythology around them.

Reports say filming began in February 2026, then stopped after Hurst’s injury, and was expected to resume in mid-October 2026. Those same reports also said four completed episodes were lined up for reshoots. If you’ve been unsure after the mixed reaction to the early imagery and some of the casting choices, the reported two-season order still makes this look like something worth watching, more like a major fantasy franchise than just another video game adaptation.
