VisionQuest episode 4 is now on Disney+, and it drops a pretty big Marvel Cinematic Universe retcon: Ultron is back inside Vision. The episode shows that Vision kept Ultron’s code after Avengers: Age of Ultron. Then, during Vision’s fight with Jocasta, Ultron takes over, forces Vision to give in, and goads Jocasta into killing her own hostage. So this isn’t some buried fragment sitting there unused. He’s active, and he’s influencing events.

That changes the way Avengers: Infinity War looks in hindsight. When Thanos used the Time Stone to undo Wanda Maximoff’s destruction of the Mind Stone and then killed Vision, Ultron may have been in there too. VisionQuest hasn’t said he was conscious at that point, or that he could do anything, but the possibility is there now.

Ultron has moved right to the center of VisionQuest. What’s happening in the series right now points to him controlling Vision’s body, and to him having Tommy Shepherd. Terry Matalas has also said Vision saving Ultron was deliberate, and that the bond between them sits at the heart of this Pinocchio-and-Frankenstein character study. The show also picks up White Vision’s story after WandaVision, finishes a trilogy with WandaVision and Agatha All Along, and takes place in 2028, ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

If you keep up with the MCU, this one’s probably on your list already, and the early reaction has been strong. VisionQuest sits at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and James Spader’s return has gotten a lot of praise.

You can watch VisionQuest on Disney+.
