Apple Music<\/a> on the web just got a small, surprisingly charming easter egg: a virtual first-generation iPod that now appears on some Apple Music 404 pages, and at music.apple.com\/tomsguide, to mark the device\u2019s 25th anniversary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Open one of those 404 pages, or head straight to music.apple.com\/tomsguide, and the whole thing leans hard into the throwback. You get a monochrome screen, buttons you can click, a scroll wheel that actually works, and 90-second previews<\/strong> of early-2000s tracks.<\/p>\n\n

The reference lands for a reason. Apple introduced the original iPod on October 23, 2001<\/strong> with the promise of \u201c1,000 songs in your pocket,\u201d a $399 price tag, and close ties to iTunes<\/a>. The device also helped legal 99-cent downloads gain ground against piracy. Apple\u2019s financial results over the years show how big the iPod became: the line eventually peaked at nearly 55 million annual sales, moved roughly 450 million units overall, and at one point accounted for about 40% of Apple\u2019s revenue before Apple shut the line down with the iPod touch in May 2022.<\/p>\n\n

If you miss single-purpose gadgets, this tribute is worth a look, especially now that refurbished and modded iPods are finding a new wave of fans.<\/p>\n\n
