Reports say Electronic Arts shut down BioWare in October 2026 and scrapped the next Mass Effect game, the one many people thought would end up being called Mass Effect Universe. If that’s true, the future of the sci-fi RPG series looks pretty bleak.

For players, the situation is simple enough, even if it’s miserable: Mass Effect doesn’t have any clear road ahead right now. Developers and fans are grieving the series, EA hasn’t given any sign that a fast comeback is coming, and analysts don’t seem to think a sale or licensing deal is likely to rescue the franchise. The series has been sitting in limbo long enough that it already kicked off the #SaveMassEffect campaign, which has passed 200,000 signatures, plus a billboard fundraiser set up outside EA headquarters.

If you need something to play now, STAR TALE: Odyssey One is a good one to pick up. It’s a free FPS on Steam that strands you alone on a colony ship after a radiation storm. From there it’s xenobionts, broken systems, oxygen management, and trying to stay alive with help from the ship’s AI.

There’s also Nexon’s The First Descendant, which has been free on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox since mid-2024. It blends third-person shooting with RPG progression and has that squad-based sci-fi vibe that lands somewhere between Mass Effect and Halo. Fair warning, though: reactions have been mixed, mostly because of the repetition and the monetization.

And if you’re thinking a little further out, Exodus still looks like the closest fit. It has former BioWare developers James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn behind it, leans hard on choice and consequences, and has Matthew McConaughey in a major role.
