On October 26<\/strong>, Microsoft rolled out a voluntary exit program for eligible employees in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and India. It could reach about 60,000 workers, or 27% of Microsoft’s 223,000-person workforce. The offer, announced the same day, applies to participating teams, mostly level 70 and below, leaves out some divisions, and comes with financial support plus career-planning help. Microsoft hasn’t said how many employees it expects will take it.<\/p>\n

If you work at Microsoft, this probably feels different from a layoff. Still, the program deserves attention because Microsoft says it wants more flexibility<\/strong> after cutting 4,800 jobs in July 2026 and more than 15,000 in 2025<\/a>, even while spending about $175 billion on 2026 data centers, chips, and computing capacity.<\/p>\n\n

If you work in tech, research points to recruiting as one of the first places automation hits<\/strong>, especially in entry-level and junior roles. That gives companies room to reshape teams by hiring fewer people, and it makes the market harder for new graduates even when unemployment stays steady.<\/p>\n\n

Microsoft hasn’t tied the voluntary exit program to automation, and it hasn’t said software will replace employees who leave. But since 2024, 11<\/strong> companies, including Amazon, Dell, and Meta, have announced cuts of more than 10,000 workers each, while the industry has spent more than $1 trillion on infrastructure since 2023. Experts are still split on what that means for the broader impact, for younger workers, and for inequality if retraining doesn’t happen.<\/p>\n
