Samsung has been hit with a 20.1 billion won<\/strong> fine, about $15.1 million, after South Korea\u2019s Fair Trade Commission said the company misled buyers in its home market about gaming performance on Galaxy devices.<\/p>\n

According to regulators, Samsung\u2019s Game Optimizing Service, or GOS, could cap CPU and GPU performance for certain games ahead of time, rather than stepping in only when heat or battery<\/a><\/strong> conditions called for it. The KFTC says performance sometimes dropped to roughly 30% of what users would normally expect.<\/p>\n\n

The decision covers the Galaxy S21<\/strong>, Galaxy S22, and Galaxy Tab S8 lineups. The KFTC points to throttling in 82 games on the Galaxy S21 and 47 on the Galaxy S22.<\/p>\n\n

For people who actually play on these phones, one example stands out. The KFTC says PUBG: NEW STATE<\/a> on the Galaxy S22 had its maximum CPU speed<\/strong> reduced by more than 68%, while maximum GPU speed was cut by almost 73%.<\/p>\n\n

The controversy first erupted in 2022<\/strong>, when users noticed benchmark apps weren\u2019t being throttled the way games were.<\/p>\n\n

Samsung later introduced a Performance Priority<\/strong> option in Samsung Game Booster. The company has also said GOS is necessary for thermal stability, steadier performance, and safety. Still, Samsung plans to fight the ruling, and it says the related lawsuits so far haven\u2019t led to court findings of consumer harm or financial damages.<\/p>\n
