If you’ve been looking for the TV show that comes closest to following The Expanse, this is probably it. Jared Harris, who played Anderson Dawes in The Expanse, leads Foundation as Hari Seldon, the mathematician behind psychohistory, a theory that predicts the unavoidable fall of a galaxy-wide empire. Foundation leaves behind The Expanse’s near-future realism and goes bigger, with vast star systems, imperial power struggles, and hard sci-fi that stretches across generations.

Lee Pace is the standout here as Brother Day, one part of the cloned Cleon line alongside Brother Dawn and Brother Dusk. Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey keep the more human storylines anchored in a series that’s also known for lavish effects, meticulous design, and thick ideas about power and social systems under strain.

If what you loved about The Expanse was the politics and the scale, Foundation takes that appeal and pushes it even further, which makes it worth picking up. That’s true even though some Isaac Asimov readers still don’t like the adaptation changes, and even though Foundation season 3 had to make it through the 2023 strike delays, reported budget problems, and a reported production restart in March 2024.

You can watch Foundation on Apple TV+.
