Clayface is in theaters now, and for a movie that never actually puts Batman on screen, it’s pretty clearly laying the groundwork for his future DC Universe debut.

Rather than cutting to Batman, Clayface stays with Gotham City cop John Borrelli, who’s tracking the murders tied to Matt Hagen’s collapse, while Dr. Caitlyn Corr helps as much as she can. It’s a smart choice. The story gets to stand on its own, and Gotham comes across as so broken that decent people can’t possibly manage its corruption, reckless science, and shape-shifting body horror by themselves.

The movie also spends time with Gotham City’s neighborhoods, power structures, and social decay after Creature Commandos. It tells Matt Hagen’s villain-origin story as an actor turned monster, too, and pulls in the psychological darkness Batman stories usually draw from without turning Clayface into a backdoor pilot.

If you’re following the DCU, this one’s easy to keep on your radar: released in October 2026 as the third film in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, Clayface leans hard into R-rated horror in the mold of The Fly and Darkman, and director James Watkins, along with DC Studios heads Peter Safran and James Gunn, already seems to have a smart stand-alone genre play on their hands, with a reported $30 million to $44 million budget, a $43 million worldwide opening ($24 million domestic, $19 million international), and an A- CinemaScore.

You can catch Clayface in theaters now.
