Apple and OpenAI\u2019s trade secrets fight is now on the calendar for trial. The court\u2019s scheduling order sets it for July 19, 2027<\/strong>, at 9:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

Judge Edward Davila is handling the case, which Apple filed in July 2026<\/strong>. Apple says former employees Tang Tan and Chang Liu took confidential documents to OpenAI and io Products to move hardware development along faster. OpenAI\u2019s answer is different: it says it never asked for Apple secrets, that any Apple files were retained by accident, and that Apple\u2019s own offboarding process may matter here. Apple also says the friction between the companies goes back to 2019.<\/p>\n\n

The court also gave Apple the go-ahead to seek discovery tied to OpenAI\u2019s hiring of Apple employees. That includes devices, messages, the use of software assistants<\/strong>, interviews, and the way Apple information was handled. Lawyers for both sides also have to hold a settlement conference by June 1, 2027. There\u2019s more to the dispute, too. OpenAI accused an Apple employee who returned in June 2026 of taking hardware secrets. Apple said that claim was false. OpenAI offered forensic images from 14 former Apple employees and said it would steer clear of Apple secrets. Apple later pointed to what it called improper injunction arguments, destruction of evidence, and the fact that OpenAI had hired more than 400 former Apple employees.<\/p>\n\n

If you pay attention to AI hardware, this case is one to watch. Apple is pushing harder into smarter devices. OpenAI is reportedly working on voice-first products<\/a><\/strong>, smart speakers, and smart glasses. A legal fight like this could slow those plans down and put even more strain on the relationship between the two companies.<\/p>\n\n

Court filings should keep coming before the 2027 trial.<\/p>\n
