Craig Zobel’s 2015 post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller Z for Zachariah, starring Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Chris Pine, is now streaming free with ads on Tubi. That puts one of 2015’s more overlooked genre films back in front of people.

In Zobel’s film, Ann appears to be the only survivor left, living in a valley that somehow escaped radiation after a nuclear apocalypse. Her fragile routine with John Loomis, whom she rescues, shifts once Caleb arrives. From there, Z for Zachariah settles into a tight three-person drama about trust, control, love, faith, autonomy, and survival, with very little interest in spectacle.

The movie is a loose adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s 1974 novel Z for Zachariah. It makes Ann older and adds Caleb, a change that divided viewers. Some preferred the book’s darker two-person conflict; others responded to the film’s quieter take on gender, religion, patriarchy, racial tension, and the kind of restraint you get in The Road or 10 Cloverfield Lane.

If you like intimate end-of-the-world stories, this one is well worth picking up.

You can watch Z for Zachariah free with ads on Tubi, and in some regions the film may also be available on YouTube.
