With DC’s Clayface now in theaters, Tom Rhys Harries is already looking ahead. The film’s star has floated Scarecrow as the next standalone DC movie, and his pitch leans hard into Gotham as psychological thriller territory.

While promoting Clayface, Harries said Scarecrow could carry a full fear-toxin “mind-bender,” the kind of story where you’re never completely sure what’s real. He framed it less like a typical comic-book blockbuster and more in the vein of The Truman Show, early Christopher Nolan, and Inception.

That idea makes sense for where DC is at right now. Gotham has always been a natural fit for darker, character-driven stories, and Scarecrow gives you fear, hallucinations, broken reality, and full psychological collapse, all without having to bring Batman in too early on this side of the DCU.

Clayface helps the argument, too. The movie has landed solid reviews, drawn praise for its body horror and for Harries’ performance, and posted good domestic box office even as international numbers have been softer in places like France and South Korea. It also keeps Gotham self-contained under director James Watkins, which matters with Creature Commandos (2024) and Superman (2025) still shaping the wider rollout.

So if you want DC to go further down the road of weirder, villain-first stories, this is one to keep an eye on. That’s true even with the ongoing argument over whether DC should really be prioritizing rogues before Batman shows up, and even with the continuity headache around Harries’ Clayface-Penguin suggestion, since Colin Farrell’s Penguin is part of The Batman universe.

For now, Clayface is in theaters, and DC is also reportedly working on Deathstroke/Bane and a Poison Ivy series for Max.
