Huntress says a set of intrusions in September and October 2026<\/strong> seems to have started the same way: attackers abused camera management software<\/a> to get a foothold inside corporate Windows networks. The entry point appears to have been DLL sideloading through CCTV software, which let the malicious activity pass more easily as part of normal operations.<\/p>\n

In every case Huntress reviewed, the camera management or CCTV platform was used to sideload a malicious DLL. That gave trusted software the job of loading attacker code, making the activity blend in much better<\/strong> than a typical malware dropper would.<\/p>\n\n

From there, the intruders launched \u201crs.win32.exe\u201d with a remote IP, port, and admin username, which Huntress believes was likely a reverse shell<\/strong>. Later they used Microsoft\u2019s legitimate \u201cWpcMon.exe\u201d to stay hidden. That kind of move is especially hard to spot if your surveillance systems aren’t watched as closely as your servers or email gateways.<\/p>\n\n

Huntress couldn’t confirm either the camera vendor or the threat actor. The suspicious file had no version data<\/strong>. Some strings pointed to 3R Global, but that connection is still unverified.<\/p>\n\n

If CCTV runs on your network, this warning deserves attention. Connected devices could reach 39 billion<\/strong> by 2030. A lot of cameras still ship with weak default settings. The average breach cost hit $4.44 million in 2025. Manufacturing and transportation accounted for about 40% of IoT malware cases. The original sources for those numbers, though, aren’t specified here.<\/p>\n\n

The advice is straightforward: inventory your camera software and firmware, limit admin access, watch for unusual processes and outbound traffic, patch quickly, replace default passwords, segment the CCTV network, and turn on encryption<\/strong> wherever the product supports it.<\/p>\n
