This isn\u2019t a straight Stevenson retelling. The series centers on Captain Flint\u2019s hidden fortune<\/strong>, with Jim Hawkins, played by Tom Sweet, relying on his near-photographic memory to track it down. The whole thing leans harder into danger, deception, and shifting loyalties than clean, straightforward swashbuckling.<\/p>\n\n

There are some big changes, too. Hayley Atwell\u2019s Bess Hawkins is no side figure here, she\u2019s central to Jim\u2019s coming-of-age story. Jim and Bess already know there\u2019s a darker side to Long John Silver after Billy Bones<\/strong>. Jack Huston\u2019s Aaron Graham brings another layer of mistrust. And David Oyelowo\u2019s version of Long John Silver is a formerly enslaved Caribbean man, a change Oyelowo has said was essential for him to take the role.<\/p>\n\n

For anyone in the mood for a revisionist pirate drama, Treasure Island sounds like it may be worth a look, even with the split reaction. Reviews and audience responses have been mixed: people have praised the cast and the tension, but they\u2019ve also called the series flat, repetitive, and a little short<\/strong>, especially at a moment when One Piece<\/a>, Our Flag Means Death, Sandokan: The Pirate Prince, and fresh Pirates of the Caribbean talk are all in the air.<\/p>\n\n
