The People v. Gorilla Grodd, the eight-episode Max series starring Skyler Gisondo, finished filming a couple of weeks back. Or, in Gisondo’s words, the show “wrapped a couple of weeks ago.”

It’s one of the first TV spinoffs to come out of James Gunn’s 2025 Superman, and it’s taking a pretty odd route there. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is built as a mockumentary-style true-crime story, with Jimmy Olsen looking into whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City. At the same time, the DCU keeps pushing further into the idea that one shared continuity can hold very different tones.

The series also carries over part of Superman’s cast. Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Wendell Pierce are back as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant, and Perry White. They’re joined by Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, plus Dan Perrault, Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.

So if you’re curious how DC’s shared universe handles comedy, mystery, horror, and some of its weirder corners, The People v. Gorilla Grodd looks like one to keep an eye on. That’s especially true with American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda running the show, and James Gunn and Peter Safran on board as executive producers.

The series has now moved into post-production for Max. Elsewhere on DC’s slate, Supergirl is still moving ahead too: Craig Gillespie is directing from a script by Ana Nogueira, Milly Alcock stars, the film adapts the 2021–2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and it’s set to reach theaters on June 26, 2026.
