Santa Monica Studio said on November 4 that God of War: Laufey, the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive, has slipped from February 16 to May 20, 2027. The studio says it needs a little more time for the “finishing touches” so the game can reach its “fullest potential,” and added that more updates are on the way soon.

This reads like a straightforward polish delay, not the kind of setback that suggests the whole thing is in trouble. Pre-orders for God of War: Laufey now shift to May, and the Collector Box PlayStation has been selling since October 13, 2026 still doesn’t come with the game. If you want to play it, you’ll need to buy God of War: Laufey separately, according to the PlayStation listing.

Laufey is the eleventh God of War game, and the first mainline entry to leave Kratos out of the lead role. You play as Laufey, better known as Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, after she wakes in the Everywhen following death and sets out to protect the people she loves. PlayStation first showed God of War: Laufey during State of Play on June 2, 2026, framing it as a standalone game.

If you had February circled, the move gets it out of the way of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, Fable, and Metro 2039, which gives God of War: Laufey a little more breathing room. It also still arrives ahead of Sony’s January 2028 cutoff for physical discs, and a disc version is still part of the plan. God of War: Laufey comes to PS5 on May 20, 2027.
