France\u2019s \u00c9tablissement fran\u00e7ais du sang (EFS) said today that three plasma storage sites<\/strong> were hit by a cyberattack targeting their refrigeration systems. The attackers tried to force donated plasma units from roughly -30\u00b0C up to 110\u00b0C. EFS says monitoring tools and alarm systems caught the temperature changes in time, so staff could secure the plasma or move it before it was damaged. The agency also said no blood products , samples, or medicines were compromised, no health effects have been identified, and collection and distribution kept running for transfusions and drug manufacturing.<\/p>\n

For people in healthcare or critical infrastructure, this case deserves a close look. Reports say the breach came through supplier Coolworld<\/strong>, by way of a third-party component that wasn’t under Coolworld\u2019s control. Only a limited number of units were affected. Even so, it\u2019s a sharp example of how OT systems and remote management setups can open a path into hospitals, labs, warehouses, and blood banks, especially when old software is still in place, network segmentation is weak, or default passwords are still sitting there unchanged.<\/p>\n\n

And it doesn’t stand alone. Similar attacks on refrigerated systems have already turned up across France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, and Estonia. In those cases, spoiled food led to losses in the millions of euros<\/strong>. Here, the target was donated plasma, and a breakdown like that can ruin sensitive medical material in a matter of hours.<\/p>\n\n

You can track the investigation through EFS, France\u2019s cybersecurity agency ANSSI, and the French Health Ministry. Russian-aligned groups have claimed comparable attacks before, but there\u2019s still no confirmed attribution here. What this case makes plain is how fast a connected system<\/strong> can stop acting like a safeguard and start acting like a tool for sabotage.<\/p>\n
