Alphabet, Google\u2019s parent company, said in its latest regulatory filing that as of September 30 it held a Qualcomm stake of just under 3 million shares<\/strong>, worth about $547.9 million. Investors didn\u2019t see that coming. Qualcomm shares jumped more than 3% in US premarket trading after the disclosure.<\/p>\n

The filing didn\u2019t say when Alphabet bought the Qualcomm shares, what it paid, or why it made the investment, and neither Alphabet nor Qualcomm has said anything publicly. Still, Qualcomm matters to Google across Android<\/a>, cloud, and connected cars. The same filing also showed Alphabet nudging up its SpaceX stake to about 555 million shares<\/strong> from 551.2 million, following its 2015 $1 billion round alongside Fidelity.<\/p>\n\n

Qualcomm recently came in below estimates for smartphone chips as demand weakened, but the company said the picture looks better in data centers. It pointed to new accelerators, a custom chip deal with ByteDance, and a 2029 revenue target<\/strong> of $15 billion. If you use Android or keep tabs on AI chips, this is one to watch. Snapdragon processors power a big share of the phone market, and Qualcomm also works with Google Cloud on automotive projects, as the companies have said.<\/p>\n\n

Taken together, Alphabet\u2019s stake looks less like a phone bet and more like a deliberate show of confidence<\/strong> in Qualcomm\u2019s push beyond handsets, including its attempt to challenge Nvidia<\/a>, even though Google also builds its own Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs.
