The Hollywood Reporter says Robert Pattinson has screen-tested for the next James Bond film, which puts The Batman star in the mix to succeed Daniel Craig as 007.

That comes a bit out of nowhere. Until now, Pattinson hadn’t really shown up in the public Bond conversation, and his name makes the shortlist feel wider. Per The Hollywood Reporter, that group already includes Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, Josh O’Connor, and Nicholas Hoult, even if Hoult still isn’t widely viewed as the favorite.

What this does make clearer is the kind of race this is turning into. There’s still no official casting announcement, but Amazon MGM Studios seems to be choosing between prestige-drama actors and actors who already know how to carry a major franchise for the first James Bond movie under the studio’s creative control. Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing, the report says.

Previous reports have Denis Villeneuve directing, and after Dune that gives the whole thing a little more weight. Pattinson’s reported connection to Dune: Part Three, along with the espionage angle he already played in Tenet, only adds to the argument for him.

If you keep a close eye on Bond casting, this is one to watch. Pattinson could, in theory, end up carrying both Batman and Bond at the same time, which brings the usual questions about scheduling and brand overlap, while fans keep arguing over star power versus a less expected choice.
