The company purchased <a title=\"Instagram\" href=\"http:\/\/onsoftware.en.softonic.com\/b\/instagram\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Instagram<\/a> for $1 billion in April 2012 to maintain social photo sharing dominance. A new report from <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> says Facebook approached <a title=\"Snapchat\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/s\/snapchat:iphone-android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Snapchat<\/a> for an acquisition worth over $1 billion but Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel turned down the offer.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to see why Facebook would want to purchase Snapchat. The massively popular photo and video sharing application is frequently used by <a title=\"Kids Love Snapchat Because They See Facebook Like Adults See LinkedIn\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/10\/28\/why-ephemeral-tech-is-here-to-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">younger users<\/a>, which Facebook is losing to competitors like Snapchat and <a title=\"WhatsApp\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/b\/whatsapp\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WhatsApp<\/a>. Snapchat offers social sharing without permanence since pictures and videos disappear after being sent. Facebook, on the other hand, constantly wants users to post publicly, recently <a title=\"Facebook now allows teens to post publicly\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/facebook-now-allows-teens-to-post-publicly\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allowing teens<\/a> to do so for the first time on the social network.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook attempted to take on Snapchat last December by releasing <a title=\"Facebook releases Poke app to compete with Snapchat\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/facebook-releases-poke-app-to-compete-with-snapchat\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook Poke for iOS<\/a>.
