Halloween <\/strong>is the perfect time of year to scare the crap out of yourself, and what better way to do that than some bone-chilling\u00a0horror games!<\/p>\n

Both PC and consoles have some great horror titles<\/a> <\/strong>that’ll leave you trembling. In honor of Halloween,\u00a0I’ve put together a selection of the best horror games, organized\u00a0them by theme, to give you some\u00a0ideas. Hopefully this\u00a0Halloween will be your most\u00a0terrifying yet, and the best part? You won’t even have to leave\u00a0home!<\/p>\n

Destination: terror<\/h3>\n

Endless corridors,\u00a0low lighting, shadowy figures suddenly\u00a0appearing and then disappearing just as quickly- these are all standard\u00a0in games that take\u00a0place in\u00a0claustrophobic nightmare scenarios. In these games, usually played in first person<\/strong> view, you must solve puzzles while\u00a0trying to avoid\u00a0getting murdered by a psychopath or some other mysterious force.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t the first of its kind but even after all these\u00a0years, people\u00a0still love Amnesia: The Dark Descent<\/a><\/strong>. During the game, you wake up with amnesia in a hundred year old\u00a0castle where you\u00a0need to survive mysterious creatures roaming around. As would happen in real life, you’re defenseless:\u00a0you can’t fight threats because you don’t have any weapons. All you can do is hide in the darkest of corners while making sure\u00a0that a bloodthirsty beast isn’t waiting for you in the shadows.<\/p>\n

Amnesia, a descent into hell that set the trend for claustrophobic nightmare games<\/em><\/p>\n

Outlast, a recent release, has a similar\u00a0aesthetic and gameplay. In Outlast,\u00a0the mysterious place you find yourself in\u00a0is a mental hospital. As in Amnesia, you have to look around every corner, but here, the madness and violence are even more evident and you’re sure to\u00a0experience some really shocking situations.<\/p>\n

If you don’t like gore <\/em>and prefer\u00a0psychological horror? Slender is the series for you. The latest installment in the saga is Slender: The Arrival<\/strong><\/a>. No longer the amateur game it started off as, The Arrival is\u00a0a professional title that will scare you senseless. If you don’t have any cash to spare, however, the\u00a0first installments of the game\u00a0are free and will still make your blood run cold when you see Slenderman<\/strong><\/a> appear\u00a0out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

Your friends, the zombies<\/h3>\n

Zombies have triumphed in popular culture because they represent one of man’s greatest fears: a deceased loved one\u00a0coming\u00a0back to life in a not so\u00a0loving way. The video game world is full of good zombie games. Some lean\u00a0more towards comedy, like Dead Rising or Plants vs. Zombies<\/a>, but others feed off of our fear\u00a0with their tense, anxious atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The Left 4 Dead<\/a><\/strong> series, available for both PC and consoles, is a great example of a terrifying zombie game. Unlike other games\u00a0where you’re forced to face your fears alone, these games invite you to experience the annihilation of the\u00a0undead in company. But, if you think having a helping hand will make things less scary,\u00a0you’re dead wrong!<\/p>\n

\"\"Left 4 Dead – having company doesn’t always make you safer!<\/em><\/p>\n

Next on the list? It may not be a typical horror game, but I\u00a0simply have to\u00a0recommend the episodic\u00a0The Walking Dead title\u00a0and its extension<\/a><\/strong>. In this case, rather than through the sudden appearance of zombies, the terror lies more in\u00a0the cruel decisions you must make, because, let’s be honest, nobody ever said that surviving\u00a0a zombie apocalypse was going\u00a0to be easy.<\/p>\n

Another game with plenty of adult drama is <\/span>The Last of Us<\/a><\/strong>, which is exclusively available for PS3. Yes, it also features the undead (or the “Infected”, post-modern evolution of traditional zombies), and in their hands, you’ll experience real terror.\u00a0But don’t forget, sometimes terror goes beyond what meets the eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"In The Last of Us the humans are also a threat<\/em><\/p>\n

Hidden Gems<\/h3>\n

Some video games in\u00a0the horror genre are\u00a0very unique, and while they may not be perfect, they achieve what they set out to do, which is to\u00a0put us in a constant state of discomfort and tension. Deadly Premonition definitely falls within this category,\u00a0and gets the trophy for the top ‘hidden gem’ in my books. Controls could\u00a0be improved, the\u00a0graphics are a bit 10 years ago,\u00a0and the\u00a0resolution won’t please everyone, but if you’re a fan of the Twin Peaks series, this game will float your boat. Go on, take a chance, you might be surprised.<\/p>\n

The truth is that Deadly Premonition is one of the strangest games we’ve had the pleasure of playing. Do you have any other examples?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A war of fear<\/h3>\n

Over the years,\u00a0first person shooters<\/em> have\u00a0also seen their fair share of terror. One of the first was Wolfenstein, although if you want a\u00a0FPS that’ll make you panic, it’s got to be Metro 2033 and its sequel Last Light. Based on two novels, these games really embrace the concept of a post-apocalyptic world, but\u00a0ramp it up to terrifying levels: mutant species, hostile inhabitants and a city with an atmosphere that breathes death.<\/p>\n

Another FPS <\/em>that’ll freeze the blood in your veins is F.E.A.R<\/a>. (and its sequel). It’s a pure shooter,\u00a0which in other games would mean violence, but in this game,\u00a0it leans more towards the realm of the supernatural and spooky.\u00a0It’s a shame that with F.E.A.R. 3 we’ve seen it all before.<\/p>\n

\"\"First person shooters\u00a0are excellent breeding grounds for terror<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

All time classics<\/h3>\n

In this article, I’ve tried to stick to relatively recent games, but it is worth mentioning three classic games\u00a0in\u00a0this genre. The first of these is\u00a0Alone in the Dark, a series that, despite not being as popular now as it was when it released,\u00a0can still give you quite a fright, despite the old school graphics.<\/p>\n

The next one I have to mention is the\u00a0Resident Evil series. Yes, the latest versions are more action than horror, but if we look back at the\u00a0first titles, they was seriously terrifying.\u00a0And who knows, maybe the next installment will crank up the horror\u00a0level\u00a0to what it was in the\u00a090s.<\/p>\n

Finally, we’ve got\u00a0Silent Hill<\/a>, whose atmosphere and unique imagery have made it an icon in the\u00a0horror game world. Although the\u00a0latest releases\u00a0haven’t\u00a0reaped the same success as the\u00a0first, you can’t deny that it’s a franchise that has stayed true to its roots, preserving the disturbing element that made it such a horrifying hit in the first place.<\/p>\n

Pyramid Head is one of the characters <\/em>gamers<\/em> fear most<\/em><\/p>\n

The monster within<\/h3>\n

Terror has no\u00a0face or, rather, it has a different face for everyone. Some people are more scared of what they can’t see, while\u00a0others get more\u00a0freaked out by putting\u00a0a face to horror. Whatever scared you most, it’s clear that there’s a horror game\u00a0that’ll make you\u00a0feel like you’re\u00a0in your worst (or best)\u00a0nightmare.<\/p>\n
