Now it appears Twitter has quietly removed the feature without explanation about why. <em><a title=\"Twitter quietly removes feature for some that lets you receive DMs from any follower\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/11\/19\/5121814\/twitter-removes-direct-messages-feature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Verge<\/a><\/em> reports some users still have the feature, while it has been disabled for others.<\/p>\n<p>The original use for the feature was to allow corporate accounts to receive messages from their followers without first having to follow them. This makes communication much simpler for businesses. However, opening up direct messages to anyone without mutual following could have resulted in an increase of spam.<\/p>\n<p>Mathew Ingram, senior writer at <em>GigaOm<\/em>, reached out to Twitter but only received a link to the original <a title=\"Experiments @ Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/2013\/experiments-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blogpost<\/a> about the experimental feature.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>I asked Twitter why the &quot;accept DMs from anyone&quot; feature is gone, and all I got was a link to this post: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HMfDnHiEn6\">https:\/\/t.co\/HMfDnHiEn6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mathew Ingram (@mathewi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mathewi\/statuses\/402539403886608384\">November 18, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Twitter has been struggling to compete with messaging services like <a title=\"WhatsApp Messenger Downloads\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/s\/whatsapp:iphone-android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WhatsApp<\/a>, <a title=\"Facebook Messenger download\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/s\/facebook-messenger:iphone-android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook Messenger<\/a>, and <a title=\"Google Hangouts download\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/s\/google-hangouts:iphone-android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Hangouts<\/a> since users are not using direct messaging on its service.
