{"id":56075,"date":"2013-11-22T00:50:27","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T22:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onsoftware.en.softonic.com\/?p=56075"},"modified":"2025-07-02T01:01:04","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T08:01:04","slug":"rumor-aol-in-talks-to-sell-winamp-to-microsoft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms-articles.softonic.io\/en\/rumor-aol-in-talks-to-sell-winamp-to-microsoft\/","title":{"rendered":"Rumor: AOL in talks to sell Winamp to Microsoft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We reported yesterday that Winamp is going to <a title=\"Winamp shutting down Dec 20th\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/winamp-shutting-down-dec-20th\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shut down operations<\/a> on December 20th of this year but the media player could potentially live on. <em>TechCrunch<\/em> is reporting that AOL, who owns Winamp developer <a title=\"Nullsoft author page\" href=\"http:\/\/en.softonic.com\/author\/nullsoft\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nullsoft<\/a>, is in talks with Microsoft to sell the media player and its <a title=\"Shoutcast\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shoutcast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shoutcast<\/a> internet radio service. Their sources say the two companies are currently in talks.<\/p>\n<p>There is some doubt to the validity of this rumor, since Microsoft has its own media player and streaming media services. <a title=\"Windows Media Player 12 review and download\" href=\"http:\/\/windows-media-player-12.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows Media Player<\/a> is still bundled with Windows 7 and up but it&#8217;s quickly losing popularity to music streaming apps and services like <a title=\"Spotify review and download\" href=\"http:\/\/spotify.en.softonic.com\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify<\/a> or the company&#8217;s own <a title=\"Xbox Music brings free streaming to Windows 8 PCs\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/xbox-music-brings-free-streaming-to-windows-8-pcs\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Xbox Music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not surprising that AOL is trying to sell off Winamp and Shoutcast as the company tries to refocus as a media advertising network. AOL owns plenty of popular blogs like <em>TechCrunch,<\/em> <em>Huffington Post<\/em>, and <em>Engadget<\/em>.
