Among many recent changes to the mobile\u00a0Facebook<\/a> experience, we’ve seen the introduction of automatic video play. In this article, I’ll show you how\u00a0to stop videos from auto-playing \u00a0on your smartphone<\/strong> when you’re using data.<\/p>\n

Suspicions were raised in July when there were rumors of Facebook \u00a0introducing video advertising<\/a>, a new feature to go hand-in-hand\u00a0with automatic video playing. Sure enough, after a few weeks, suspicions was confirmed, with an update of the mobile app where\u00a0Facebook introduced auto-play\u00a0of videos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For some, it’ll be convenient not having to press play on a video to watch it, but that doesn’t mean that video auto-play won’t be problematic for others. Above all, we don’t\u00a0want all of our data consumed.<\/p>\n

Luckily, there’s a way to stop auto-play when you’re using the data connection on your phone<\/strong>, whether you have an Android, an\u00a0iPhone, or an iPad.<\/p>\n

Block auto-play on 3G\u00a0on Android<\/h3>\n

1.<\/strong> To stop auto-play\u00a0on your Facebook timeline on Android, open the application and click on the icon with the three lines in the top left corner.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> In the side menu that opens, scroll down to find App\u00a0Settings<\/em> and tap it.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Make sure the box is checked<\/strong> for Auto-play videos on WiFi only<\/em>, and that underneath it says\u00a0“On”.<\/p>\n

Block auto-play on 3G\u00a0on iPhone and iPad<\/h3>\n

1.<\/strong> From the home screen of your device, go to Settings <\/em>and then scroll down and tap Facebook.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Once you’ve clicked on it, below the Facebook icon, you’ll see Settings. <\/em>Tap here.<\/p>\n

3. In the Photo\u00a0and Video\u00a0section, you’ll\u00a0find the item Auto-play videos on WiFi only<\/em>. Make sure that the switch is moved to the right and is green, just like in the image below.<\/p>\n

Facebook has said that video advertising<\/a> will play automatically as well.<\/strong> In this case, we’ll have to wait and see, once video advertising auto-play is\u00a0introduced, if the same trick will stop ads from auto-playing, or if the social network will decide to prohibit the ability to stop auto-play to increase advertising revenue.<\/p>\n
