The first major update for Windows 8.1<\/a> is finally here. Much like a\u00a0service pack for older versions of Windows<\/a>, it expands\u00a0on the system,\u00a0making\u00a0improvements to existing features and security issues, while including some significantly new functions. Take a look at our installation guide<\/strong> below to make sure that you get all the critical updates for Windows 8.1 Update 1. You can install Windows 8.1 Update 1<\/strong> in two ways:\u00a0automatically via Windows Update, or manually. We’ll go through both options below.<\/p>\n

Automatically install via Windows Update<\/h3>\n

1. Open Windows Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Select and install all Important<\/em> updates<\/strong><\/p>\n

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is not offered as a single package, but consists of several separate updates. The Windows Updater will only gives you the first file, which can be identified as\u00a0KB2919442<\/strong>. After installing this update and restarting your system, you can gradually find the\u00a0other files you’ll need to\u00a0install. <\/strong> Tip:<\/strong> Open the Windows Updater<\/strong> until you no longer see any new\u00a0updates; this will ensure that you actually installed all the individual files.<\/p>\n

Manually install Windows 8.1 Update 1<\/h3>\n

As mentioned, Windows 8.1 Update 1 consists of individual smaller updates that you have to\u00a0install one after the other in a specific order. Depending on your version of Windows, there are separate updates for 32 bit and 64 bit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1. Identify your version of Windows <\/strong><\/p>\n

Using the search function, find System Information.<\/em><\/p>\n

This will open the System Information window containing\u00a0important system data. Here, you can see if you’re running\u00a0Windows with\u00a032-bit<\/strong> (x86) or 64-bit <\/strong>(x64).<\/p>\n

2. Install the first update: KB2919442<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the actual Windows 8.1 update, you have to install the pre-update<\/strong>, identified as\u00a0KB2919442.\u00a0Download the file and start the installation by double clicking on it. After a reboot, you’ll be able to continue with the update.<\/p>\n
