{"id":68830,"date":"2014-07-01T12:18:39","date_gmt":"2014-07-01T10:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/onsoftware.en.softonic.com\/?p=68830"},"modified":"2025-07-02T00:36:59","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T07:36:59","slug":"rumor-windows-9-threshold-preview-coming-this-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms-articles.softonic.io\/en\/rumor-windows-9-threshold-preview-coming-this-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"Rumor: Windows 9 &#8216;Threshold&#8217; preview coming this fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next version of <a title=\"Windows news\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/t\/windows\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows<\/a>, code named &#8220;Threshold,&#8221; is expected to debut some time in 2015 but we&#8217;ll get a <strong>preview this fall<\/strong> according to sources speaking with <em>ZDNet<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Windows 8.1 update 1\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/windows-8-1-update-1-announced\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Windows 8.1<\/a> focused on <strong>improving the desktop experience<\/strong> and Windows Threshold will continue the trend. Threshold will adapt to the type of hardware you&#8217;re using. If it senses a mouse and keyboard, it will boot to the desktop by default. If you have a touch screen, it will boot to the live-tile interface.<\/p>\n<p>Windows 8.1 already allows users to choose to boot to desktop by default, but Windows Threshold will automate the process.<\/p>\n<p>We also saw a <a title=\"Microsoft teases the return of the Start Menu\" href=\"http:\/\/news.en.softonic.com\/microsoft-teases-the-return-of-the-start-menu\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preview<\/a> of the revised Start Menu coming to Threshold. It&#8217;s a hybrid of the transitional Windows 7 Start Menu and Windows 8 live-tile interface.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65119\" title=\"Windows 9 with Start Menu\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Windows-9-Start-Menu-568x3191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Windows-9-Start-Menu-568x3191.jpg 568w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Windows-9-Start-Menu-568x3191-256x143.jpg 256w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Windows-9-Start-Menu-568x3191-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2014\/04\/Windows-9-Start-Menu-568x3191-238x134.jpg 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is also planning <strong>Windows 8.1 Update 2<\/strong>, which will provide minor usability improvements. This update is expected to roll out this August with a bunch of security updates.<\/p>\n<p>There is still uncertainty whether Threshold will be an entirely new version of Windows or if it will be a point update. Microsoft may want to brand Threshold as <strong>Windows 9<\/strong> to tempt users still clinging onto Windows 7.
