The change will happen over the next few weeks, and there is no work-around. If you wish to use Skype, you’ll have to move to another mobile platform.

Windows Phone 7 was released in 2010 and last updated in 2013. Skype explains that the only way they can maintain the best quality and security for the app is by making sure people use the latest version, and therefore they sometimes have to retire apps for older operating systems.

However, as we reported last week when Skype appeared to drop support for Mac OS X Leopard, you can still use Skype on Microsoft’s aging and unsupported Windows XP. That’s much older than either Leopard or Windows Phone 7. It would seem likely that the small user bases for both of these outdated operating systems contributed to Skype’s decision to stop supporting them. While Leopard support will be reinstated soon, Windows Phone 7 is being retired ‘permanently’.

Source: Skype

Related Stories

Skype no longer works on Mac OS X Leopard or earlier versions (update)

Microsoft has recreated its 1994 website for its 20th anniversary

Voice messaging comes to Skype for iPhone

Follow me on Twitter: @jonathanriggall

Microsoft owned Skype, the popular free call and messaging app, is being discontinued for Windows Phone 7.
