Why so many apps for women are just plain sexist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What kind of apps are women interested in downloading? A quick Google search of <strong>\u201ctop apps for women\u201d <\/strong>yields some depressingly obvious\u00a0 results: shopping, cooking, make up, and tracking periods and fertility cycles. While you may think that as a society we\u2019ve moved beyond these gender stereotypes (something that <strong>International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> on 8 March aims to eradicate), many app developers haven&#8217;t taken this on board.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-79255\" title=\"offensiveappsforwomen\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/stock-624712_1920-568x377.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/stock-624712_1920-568x377.jpg 568w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/stock-624712_1920-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/stock-624712_1920-256x170.jpg 256w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/stock-624712_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the many articles that list the supposed \u201ctop apps for women\u201d, you\u2019d be hard pushed to find anything outside the aforementioned categories.\u00a0 An article <a title=\"16 iPhone Apps That Will Make Women\u2019s Lives Easier\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/laraparker\/16-apps-all-women-should-know-about#.nuj5AmZBp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted on Buzzfeed <\/a>on the 16 apps that will make women\u2019s lives easier is one of the worst examples of this, leading with period tracking apps before moving on to cooking, couponing and fashion. Even when the article goes as far to recommend an app that isn\u2019t related to fashion and periods (<a title=\"VSCO Cam\" href=\"http:\/\/vsco-cam.en.softonic.com\/android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VSCO Cam<\/a>), it can\u2019t help reverting back to outdated and offensive stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt one point or another we\u2019ve all grown tired of the same old Instagram filters to show off our #ootd or latest nail polish color.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;SO GLAD SOMEONE MADE THIS LIST. All I care about is beauty products, when I&#8217;m bleeding and how to optimize my time in a grocery store.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then there is Cosmopolitan magazine, with one of its top suggestions being an app that lets you <a title=\"Harry Styles My Boyfriend\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.co.uk\/entertainment\/g1131\/cosmo-guide-to-downloading-the-best-smartphone-apps-ever\/?slide=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">virtually date Harry Styles from One Direction<\/a>. What self-respecting woman wouldn&#8217;t have that on her phone?<\/p>\n<p>While Business Insider\u2019s <a title=\"18 Apps That Every Modern Lady Should Have On Her Phone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apps-modern-woman-2014-8?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">18 apps for modern women<\/a> article does provide a much more balanced view, it is still weighted towards fashion, cooking, and weight loss apps. This is despite the fact that the article recognizes: \u201cToday&#8217;s women are CEOs of tech companies; they are starring in their own TV shows; and they are managing directors at investment banks\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-79254\" title=\"MarissaMayerYahooCEO\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Vara-Mayer-Yahoo-1200-568x371.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Vara-Mayer-Yahoo-1200-568x371.jpg 568w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Vara-Mayer-Yahoo-1200-256x167.jpg 256w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/Vara-Mayer-Yahoo-1200.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Compare that to the same publication\u2019s <a title=\"17 Apps Every Modern Gentleman Should Have On His Phone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/17-apps-for-the-modern-gentleman-2014-7#hotel-tonight-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list of apps for the modern gentlemen<\/a>, which includes apps such as <a title=\"Circa\" href=\"http:\/\/circa-news.en.softonic.com\/android\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Circa<\/a> that \u201cwill save your time and your eyesight by condensing news articles without sacrificing information\u201d. Women wouldn\u2019t be interested in this type of app \u2013 <strong>tech CEOs of the like of Marissa Mayer (Yahoo) and Lisa Su (Advanced Micro Devices) are probably too busy cooking, shopping, and tracking their periods to read the news<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As is often the case, the comments on the Buzzfeed article are both more interesting and relevant than the piece itself. The responses perfectly sum up how wide of the mark this approach to &#8220;apps for women&#8221; is, while voicing the general dissatisfaction about the way that these stereotypes still permeate society (and the media) today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSO GLAD SOMEONE MADE THIS LIST. All I care about is beauty products, when I&#8217;m bleeding and how to optimize my time in a grocery store,\u201d remarked one woman.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the apps on these type of lists have a genuine reason to exist and fulfill a purpose, the problem is the implication that these are the <strong>only<\/strong> types of apps that women are interested in. These lists also omit many of the <a title=\"Best free Android apps\" href=\"http:\/\/features.en.softonic.com\/best-free-android-apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">basic apps that everyone should have on their phones<\/a>, such as anti virus suites, productivity apps, music streaming etc.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are apps out there clearly aimed at the female demographic, which are questionable at best. The current trend for airbrushing selfies so you look nothing like yourself is leading the way. Don\u2019t worry girls, if you look a bit \u201cfat\u201d in your selfie, you can shed those pounds with <a title=\"SkinnyCam\" href=\"http:\/\/skinnycamapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SkinnyCam<\/a>. But if you like to take a\u00a0 (virtual) beating in real life to help you lose those extra pounds and stop you looking like a heifer, then there is always <a title=\"'Hey, Fattie' App Uses Hot Anime Men To Shame Women Into Losing Weight\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/08\/02\/hey-fattie-app-weight-loss-women_n_3695874.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hey Fattie<\/a> (catchy name). Fancy berating your ex boyfriends? Then <a title=\"Lulu\" href=\"https:\/\/onlulu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lulu<\/a> is the one for you. But we wouldn&#8217;t want to omit mention of all the wonderfully sexist apps for men. Why not check out <a title=\"iAmAMan\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/WebObjects\/MZStore.woa\/wa\/viewSoftware?id=298727312&amp;mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iAmAMan<\/a>, which allows you to track the menstrual cycles of your many girlfriends or <a title=\"Fit or Not\" href=\"http:\/\/brayola.com\/fitornot\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fit or Not<\/a>, which lets you rate a woman&#8217;s cleavage?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-79252\" title=\"Positiveappsforwomen\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/woman-281473_1920-568x401.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/woman-281473_1920-568x401.jpg 568w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/woman-281473_1920-256x180.jpg 256w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2015\/03\/woman-281473_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Redressing this balance, there are some excellent apps that <a title=\"Why Women Need Personal Safety Apps\" href=\"http:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/tech\/news\/a14941\/womens-safety-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help protect women\u2019s safety<\/a>, as well as <a title=\"4 Apps Designed to Help Women Diagnosed With Breast Cancer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.freeenterprise.com\/story\/4-innovative-apps-designed-to-help-women-diagnosed-with-breast-cancer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">help women diagnosed with breast cancer<\/a>, <a title=\"Apps designed to help protect against domestic violence\" href=\"http:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/apps-designed-to-help-protect-against-domestic-violence\/29458340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">offer protection against domestic violence<\/a>, and <a title=\"App designed to promote women\u2019s human rights\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/app-designed-to-promote-women-s-human-rights-\/37073298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">promote women\u2019s humans rights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mike Lavigne, founder of fertility app Clue, has a distinctly refreshing take on designing apps for women. In <a title=\"Why App Creators Need To Rethink Their Approach To Designing &quot;For Women&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3026999\/dialed\/why-app-creators-need-to-rethink-their-approach-to-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interview with Fast Company<\/a>, he discussed why app creators need to rethink their approach when designing products for women.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cUltimately, <strong>the vast majority of women-focused apps out there are flat-out embarrassing<\/strong>. They\u2019re embarrassing because they reinforce an offensive, out-dated stereotype of femininity\u2026 It\u2019s time we designers stop pandering to cultural norms, start disassembling our stereotypes, and get in touch with how people &#8211; who have a huge amount of variability &#8211; actually feel about themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well said Lavigne, and let\u2019s hope we see a lot more of this kind of approach and attitude in the future.
