Be careful, it could be a virus. At least according to security experts at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/new-multi-platform-malwareadware-spreading-via-facebook-messenger\/81590\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kaspersky Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Below, we\u2019ll tell you everything you need to know about this threat, and how to prevent it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The virus is passed through a Facebook message from a friend. On his\/her behalf, you\u2019ll receive a shortened link (usually from the domain bit.ly) with the text <\/span><b>\u201c&lt;your friend\u2019s name&gt; Video.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It looks like the image below:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93427\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-1.jpg\" alt=\"virus-1\" width=\"732\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-1.jpg 732w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-1-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Obviously, your friend David didn\u2019t send you this message. Rather, <\/span><b>a hacker took advantage of a vulnerability in his account <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to try to spread the virus to\u00a0you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If we click on the link, it takes us to a Google doc with an image based on <\/span><b>one your friend <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has on Facebook, posing as a video. If you click it, it takes you to another site depending on the browser and the operating system used (yeah, nobody\u2019s in the clear, as it affects\u00a0Windows, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xds.TRS0&amp;_nkw=mac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and Linux).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93428\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-2.jpg\" alt=\"virus-2\" width=\"725\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-2.jpg 725w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-2-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, if you\u2019re using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xphone.TRS0&amp;_nkw=firefox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firefox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on Windows, by clicking the fake video, you\u2019ll be redirected to a site with a fake window to update Flash Player and an <\/span><b>.exe file <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that mimics the actual update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93429\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-31.jpg\" alt=\"virus-31\" width=\"722\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-31.jpg 722w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-31-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, if the victim accesses it from Chrome, he\/she will be redirected to a page that looks like YouTube and displays an error message that prompts us\u00a0to download a browser extension. This\u00a0<\/span><b>extension<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is actually a \u201cdownloader\u201d that lets a malicious file enter your PC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-93430\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-4.jpg\" alt=\"virus-4\" width=\"730\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-4.jpg 730w, https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2017\/08\/virus-4-300x130.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hackers&#8217; reasons for this malicious act seem to be purely economic:<\/span><b> the files installed without our permission are adware<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, i.e. a means\u00a0to show us unwanted ads that hackers profit from.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How can I prevent this virus?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As always, <\/span><b>common sense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the best antidote to any virus. <\/span><b>Be cautious\u00a0<\/b>of<b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">any strange links: if a friend sends you something, he\/she will message you more personally than hackers using bots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, <\/span><b>always keep your PC updated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xds.TRS0&amp;_nkw=antivirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">antivirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and other security programs.
