I guess that\u2019s one reason to thank the Oscars\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intermissionbristol.co.uk\/film\/2017\/2\/4\/are-the-oscars-elitist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allegedly elitist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> selection process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On the other hand, winning an Oscar by no means guarantees the film\u2019s any good. In fact, there are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/search\/title?at=0&amp;groups=oscar_winners&amp;sort=user_rating,asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">plenty of Oscar-winners languishing in IMDB\u2019s lower ranks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. She meets and sleeps with a movie director, Chris, despite already betrothed to Ken (cue insipid romantic plotline). The cast is respectable, including Jeff Goldblum, Donna Summer, and Debra Winger, and electro legend Giorgio Moroder is behind the music. But sadly, that isn\u2019t quite enough to elevate the movie above its glitter-balls, bell-bottoms, and platform shoes. The film\u2019s slapstick humor and sickly sweet romance might put some off, but overall the gags are pretty good (if you like \u2018em crude) and Mr. Murphy\u2019s transformation into the Klump family is impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4.\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0052389\/?ref_=adv_li_tt\"><b>White Wilderness<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oscar: Best Documentary, Features \u2013 Ben Sharpsteen<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IMDB rating: 5.6<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-97731\" src=\"https:\/\/articles-img.sftcdn.net\/sft\/articles\/auto-mapping-folder\/sites\/3\/2018\/02\/white-wilderness-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Directed by Disney legend James Algar, this 1958 wildlife documentary won an Oscar for its portrayal of the rugged Canadian wilderness. But despite being beautifully shot, it has come under fire for alleged animal cruelty. One scene showing lemming\u2019s committing suicide was faked, while another scene involving a polar bear was staged in the studio. Not cool, Disney. Unfortunately, director Harold Prince\u2019s experience (<i>Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof,<\/i> and others) wasn\u2019t enough to save <i>A Little Night Music<\/i>. Not even big names like Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Rigg could drag the film out of mediocrity. But the songs are sweet (if you like that kind of thing).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most filmmakers would admit to wanting an Oscar, but as these movies show, the golden gong isn&#8217;t always a stamp of quality.
