OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Translate: Google Translate’s Competition?

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Translate. This new translation tool, separate from ChatGPT itself, combines linguistic accuracy with artificial intelligence to go beyond traditional translators. Available in more than 50 languages, OpenAI’s offering arrives to compete with Google Translate, but with a more customisable, context-oriented approach. Although the launch has been low-key, it gives us a glimpse of the potential of a service that could change the way we translate and adapt our texts for different audiences.

A translator with built-in artificial intelligence

ChatGPT Translate lets us translate texts by typing directly, speaking, or even uploading an image, although this last option is not yet operational. Translation works automatically, with source-language detection, and returns the result in the language we select. An interface that will already feel very familiar to us, but with a twist.

The most interesting part comes right after the translation. OpenAI has integrated a personalisation system that, through simple prompts, allows us to adjust the tone and context of the translated text, something other services do not offer as directly. We can ask for the translation to be more formal, to adapt to a child audience, or to take on an academic style, and with a single tap we switch to ChatGPT to keep refining the result.

A simple approach, but one that leads us to think of translation as a process in different stages, where we shape the content until we get exactly the result we expect.

A different approach from Google Translate

Google Translate is currently the benchmark for compatibility and features, offering us document translation, full web-page translation, handwriting input, real-time conversations, and support for hundreds of languages. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Translate, for now, focuses on translating text, although it accepts voice input.

Its proposal, however, is not about covering every possible feature, but about offering the flexibility of AI to edit and fine-tune the translation, which is especially interesting when we are not only trying to understand the content, but to communicate it in the best possible way. This detail, although simple, changes the perspective: instead of translating literally, we can achieve a result that respects not only the original style, but also our own intention.

ChatGPT Translate opens the door to a much more creative and contextualised kind of translation, which can grow a lot if OpenAI expands its multilingual support and activates the other multimodal functions. When, in future versions, we can work with images, documents, and real-time conversations, we will have a tool that could integrate very naturally into educational, professional, and content-creation environments.

At a time when content needs to be localised with great care as well as translated, AI-powered translation is evolving towards a model in which what we say matters as much as how we say it. With ChatGPT Translate, OpenAI is starting to put that future within reach of anyone who wants to go one step beyond literal translation.
